Prada has recently released information about their new nylon bag collection made from recycled ocean plastic which will be launching in 2021.

The influential Italian fashion house known for their variety of nylon bags and clothing have brought forward their plan on only producing “Econyl” products in the future. Econyl is nylon made from recycled plastic and has already been incorporated into the designs of well-know brands such as Stella McCartney, Adidas and Triumph.

The collection will be known as “Re-Nylon” and will consist of 6 bags including belt bags, shoulder bags and backpacks. The plastic used will come from ocean pollution such as dumped plastic, fishing nets and textile fibre waste.

Head designer, Miuccia Prada, claims “Focusing on innovative materials will allow the company to explore new boundaries of creative design while meeting the demand for ethical products”.

Lorenzo Bertelli, head of marketing and communication at Prada said that “Re-Nylon” is the “start of an era” and that it has been noticed that the demand for sustainable and ethical goods has increased. Bertelli also encourages his competitors to lean towards a more sustainable manufacturing process.

Prada has a known history advocating ethics within the fashion realm as they declared last year, an end to fur usage in their women’s collection by February 2020.

As Prada have maintained success with their released nylon “Vela” bags launched in 1984, their next step towards continuing their nylon use in an efficient and eco-friendly manner is important as it creates awareness regarding the need for sustainable fashion, an industry which holds responsibility for a third of our oceans plastic pollution.

As Bertelli says, “It’s a massive reduction of nylon and a big impact in terms of sustainability”.
