On Monday, activists and celebrities walked the green carpet in the name of sustainable fashion.

For the third year running, the Green Carpet Fashion Awards have brought together the biggest names in fashion and media to celebrate sustainable fashion.

The awards, hosted by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana in collaboration with Eco-Age, took place in Milan’s La Scala.

The 2019 edition was inspired by the 500th anniversary of Leonardo Da Vinci’s death, with the awards creative director Hamish Bowles filling the room with all things renaissance.

Guests including Stella McCartney, Dame Anna Wintour, Valentino, Colin Firth, Shailene Woodley, Ian Somerhalder, Nikki Reed, Pixie Geldof, Jess Glynne, and Kat Graham were in attendance to celebrate the people who are shaping the fashion industry and steering it towards a sustainable future.

To maintain the sustainability agenda, guests were encouraged to take up the Green Carpet Challenge and dress for the evening in a sustainable look which showcased innovative materials and processes.

According to WRAP UK, the value of unused clothing in wardrobes has been estimated at around £30 billion in the UK. On top of that, an estimated £140 million worth of clothing goes to landfill each year.

The green carpet was made from ECONYL® regenerated nylon, created from recycled ghost fishing nets and other nylon waste.

Eco-Age say that all plants and flowers used in the production of the event will donated to the City of Milan and re-planted after the awards.

Carlo Capasa and Livia Firth gave the opening speech before the evening’s hosts, Adut Akech and Jon Kortajaren, started the evening with the first award.

Livia Firth, organiser of the awards and founder of consultancy Eco-Age, has been a major player in the fashion industry over the last decade, championing sustainability and campaigning to redefine the production and consumption of textiles.

Twelve awards were presented during the event, winners included Stella McCartney, who was awarded the The GCFA Groundbreaker Award and model Doutzen Kroes, who was presented with the Social Media Changemaker award for using her platform for activism.
