Sekelduin Substation – Namibia

The 10th anniversary edition of African Power & Energy Elites recognises the projects shaping the continent’s future infrastructure

In September 2025, just east of Swakopmund, a commissioning ceremony was lauded as a continental first as NamPower energised the 132/66/33 kV Sekelduin Substation, a fully digital facility delivered at an investment of N$394 million.

Fed from the existing Kuiseb Substation some 35km to the southeast by parallel 132kV overhead lines, the new node strengthens resilience along the fragile coastal corridor while opening headroom for the Erongo region’s rising electricity demand.

Behind its understated exterior, Sekelduin redefines how power infrastructure is built and managed.

The indoor switching station employs compact mixed-technology switchgear for the 132kV and 66kV circuits, complemented by metal enclosed gas-insulated switchgear at 33kV.

Two transformation levels step power down from the 132kV busbar, all housed within a purpose-designed structure to shield sensitive equipment from corrosive desert air and salt-laden sea mist.
