Technology as investment for municipal revenue collection
Implementing new technologies at municipalities can drive efficiency and sustainability
Municipalities need to learn to look at technology as an investment, not as a financial burden says Lomile Modiselle, Director of Energy & Electricity Technical at the City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, South Africa.
Speaking at Enlit Africa 2025, Modiselle spoke about the mind shift required around investing capital at the start of the project which can eventually create revenue for municipalities.
“We have technology such as predictive analysis – if we install that to our bigger components, they are able to monitor when the fault is going to come and cause a catastrophic failure into the asset, like your transformer,” she explained.
Municipal revenue collection is a hot topic of discussion at the Municipal Forum at Enlit Africa, where representatives from local municipalities gather to discuss concepts such as blended financing and how they are going to address the funding of large scale infrastructure builds.
Modiselle also goes into how the municipality is addressing the energy transition, the importance of investing in smart technologies such as AMI metering systems and predictive analytics, and the crucial role of technology in driving energy efficiency and sustainability.
