Special Session title: Novel technologies, materials and methods for water purification and desalination

Special Session Chairs: Prof. Theodoros Karakasidis, Lab. of Hydromechanics and Environmental Engineering, Dept. of Civil Engineering, University of Thessaly Assoc. Prof. Ioannis Sarris, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, University of West Attica, Athens, Greece

The Conference will be held at the 5-star hotel "Corfu Holiday Palace" in Corfu Island, from 24th to 27th of June 2020.

Brief Description and topics

Water quality issues are of particular importance worldwide due to population growth, urbanization and industrialization that have continuously stressed hydrological resources.

Heavy metal removal from water release from plating plants, mining and alloy manufacturing poses a significant threat to the environment and public health, since they have the ability to accumulate, they are not biodegradable and cannot be metabolized or decomposed. Water is the most usual conductor to transfer heavy metals from almost all contamination sources to both the environment and humans. Therefore, reliable methods are needed to remove heavy metals from water. Current water and wastewater treatment technologies and infrastructures for heavy metal removal present several disadvantages. Water desalination is also an important issue, where new technologies and especially nanotechnology and nanofluids is a promising area too. This special session aims to bring together researchers and practitioners giving them opportunities to discuss and disseminate ideas on modelling and experiments on water purification and desalination with modern techniques and materials Topics which will be thus of interest are but not limited to:

• Magnetic nanoparticles for heavy ion removal

• Driving of magnetic nanoparticles

• Nano-fluidics and micro-fluidics for heavy ions removal

• Novel nano-membranes using nanotechnology for impurities removal

• Desalination using eclectic and magnetic fields in nano and micro fluidics

• Nanomaterials in water purification and desalination

• Carbon nanotubes in membranes for water purification

• Computational fluid dynamics in the design of heavy ion removal

• Atomistic modeling of micro and nano-flows in the design of heavy ion removal

• Modeling of ion separation in nano and micro-channels using electric and or magnetic fields

• Capacitive deionization

• Microbial desalination cells

• Presentation of pilot studies
