Every year, the European Commission (Directorate-General for Energy and Executive Agency for SMEs) organises the EU SUSTAINABLE ENERGY WEEK (EUSEW) – the biggest event dedicated to renewables and efficient energy use in Europe. SolarPower Europe is a proud communications partner of the EUSEW and will organise several sessions at the policy conference.

Solar Skin -  Unveiling the next building generation

European cities will have to accelerate the deployment of renewable energies beyond the energy system and foster significant investments in energy efficiency if they want to become carbon-neutral by 2050.

In this context, solar technologies such as Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) are best positioned to push a deep decarbonisation of the EU building stock, while contributing to the Union’s climate and industrial leadership and to the creation of local jobs and businesses.

How will digitalisation transform the energy system?

Digitalisation in the energy sector is a key topic in the context of the development of long-term climate and energy strategies at national and at EU level. Transition policies in Europe have to make the most of new digital solutions.

The event will address crucial questions like access to data, system flexibility and demand response. The focus on energy efficiency gains of digitalisation is relevant. Energy efficiency is the bedrock for an attractive pathway to 2050, as it is a key enabler of a fair, fast and attractive energy transition.

Corporate sourcing of renewables: the case for SMEs and supply chains

Corporate sourcing of renewables can add significant jobs and economic value to the EU, but so far the share of renewable power purchased by companies is only a small share of newly installed renewable energy projects in any given year. Whilst IT companies, pharmaceuticals, food and drink giants and energy intensives are increasing purchasing renewables, a recent survey shows that corporate sourcing by small and medium sized businesses are more limited.

This event will look at how European policy-makers can support the industry's objective to move from 100 to 100,000 corporate buyers in the European market.

Representatives of Island regional and local governments in collaboration with the member Industries of Greening The Islands are organising a meeting on 18 June in Brussels with the technical and political support of the Committee of the Regions (CoR).

The meeting will aim to debate on the content and main objectives of national plans & strategies and on the role that Island governments and the private sector should play both in their design and implementation.

Decarbonisation at least cost: renewables beyond support

This event will address the state of play of RES capacities and technologies for RES installations reaching the end of their support period. It will look into different options available to RES operators for keeping their installations running without support, for instance through Power Purchase Agreements.

Participants of this event can expect an interesting session and a lively panel discussion with a diverse set of speakers and panellists from various parts of Europe and with different backgrounds. They will share their experiences and debate how the European energy market should accommodate more renewables beyond support.

A competitive future for decarbonised EU industries?

The session will highlight the need to decarbonise the industrial sectors of the EU in a sustainable manner, while maintaining competitiveness to ensure jobs and growth for Europe’s citizens.

The event will bring case examples of solutions to the decarbonisation of industry through decarbonised feedstocks. EU industry needs diverse feedstocks and this involves that gas needs to decarbonise/become renewable to continue to be a reliable feedstock for industry. A cross sector of actors from industry and energy will join the session to discuss the challenge of keeping EU industry competitive into the 2050s and the role of energy within that context.

Power systems with high share of renewables: vision and innovation

By 2050, an important share of electricity will need to come from renewables.

On 20 June, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the two H2020 projects RESERVE & SOGNO, and the TSO/DSO platform team up to offer you a session that will look into the innovations and solutions that are needed on a technical, digital and market level to manage a power system with an increasing share of variable renewable sources.
