The UNIDO and SICA Countries have launched regional center for sustainable energy expected to create momentum for the United Nations climate action summit.

This was concretized during the opening ceremony of the sixth Regional Energy Congress (COREN 2019), organized every year in El Salvador, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System (SG-SICA), and launched the Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency of SICA countries (SICREEE).

“Today, we make an important regional effort. We launch the pilot phase of SICREEE as recently approved by the SICA Council of Energy Ministers”, Dr. Marco Vinicio Cerezo, SICA Secretary General announced recently.

“This initiative marks an important investment in our future generations in Central America. Through regional actions, the center will help member States address existing barriers to sustainable energy and climate technology markets more effectively”.

“We hope that SICREEE will become a regional beacon that promotes economies of scale and joint learning between countries”, said Guillermo Castellá Lorenzo, Director and Regional Representative of UNIDO in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean Ing. “I very much appreciate the SG-SICA climate leadership and encourage SICREEE to become an active member of the Global Network of Regional Centers for Sustainable Energy established by UNIDO”.

During the event, a joint declaration between UNIDO and SG-SICA was signed to enhance, within a five-year framework, cooperation in the areas of industry 4.0, agribusiness, aquaculture and fisheries, resource efficiency and circular economy, parks and eco-industrial clusters, energy and sustainable cities, electric and bio-pharmaceutical mobility.

SICREEE was established with the financial support of the Austrian Development Agency (ADA) within the framework of the UNIDO Global Network of Regional Sustainable Energy Centers and of the Country Programme for El Salvador.
