Earth Overshoot Day 2019 is July 29. Join the global campaign!

Earth Overshoot Day 2019 lands on July 29. This is the day when humanity has used nature’s budget for the entire year, according to our latest data.

We’re excited to announce that the two winning entries of this year’s Guess-the-Date Contest are both from the United States. Watch their video and check out their winning calculation methods here.

In 2019, Earth Overshoot Day is the earliest ever. This means that humanity is now using nature 1.75 times as fast as the planet’s ecosystems can regenerate. In other words, humanity is using 1.75 Earths. Carbon dioxide emissions currently make up 60% of humanity’s demand on nature.

#MoveTheDate towards one-planet prosperity

The good news is, we can reverse the trend. If we move Earth Overshoot Day by five days every year, we’ll use less than 1 Earth before 2050. Solutions are readily available. We invite you to take steps to #MoveTheDate from the energy, food, cities, population, and planet levers. Opportunities for action include starting a population conversation, launching workplace programs such as food waste reduction, and petitioning governments to manage natural resources responsibly.

We, at Global Footprint Network, believe that it is possible to #MoveTheDate. And it requires each one of us being actively involved. Together, let’s grow the movement.

Looking forward to being in action with you to #MoveTheDate!
