Earth Overshoot Day: Innovative solutions key to a sustainable future.

30 07 2021 | 12:14

Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year.

In 2021, it falls on Thursday July 29.

Earth Overshoot Day is hosted and calculated by Global Footprint Network, an international research organization that provides decision-makers with a menu of tools to help the human economy operate within Earth’s ecological limits.

To determine the date of the day, Global Footprint Network combined the most reliable data and formed the most reasonable assumptions to assess humanity’s resource situation.

The organisation has also calculated the Earth Overshoot Day for each region globally. You can find out what date the day would be if it was based on where you live here.

GFN are calling on people around the world to explore and act on innovative solutions now so that we can #MovetheDate.

Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council, gives a quick overview of the Day below and the importance of COP26 in November this year.

In November this year, the UK will host COP26 in Glasgow, marking a crucial deadline for countries to present more ambitious climate commitments and an opportunity to #MovetheDate.

For nearly three decades the UN has been bringing together almost every country on earth for global climate summits – called COPs – which stands for ‘Conference of the Parties’. In that time climate change has gone from being a fringe issue to a global priority.

Climate Action is pleased to announce a groundbreaking Public - Private Partnership with Scottish Enterprise to create the Innovation Zone at COP26, a global showcase of climate innovation and investment.

Climate Action recognises the imperative need for transformative and collaborative innovation and finance to fast-track the world to net zero and hopes to accelerate the conversations at COP26 by hosting the Innovation Zone.
